Choosing an SEO Company Carefully
Looking out in the world of the web, there are millions of companies listed. All with different abilities and fields. Searching for an SEO company to handle your website is no different. For the past year I have worked with a couple of different SEO companies. I have seen the way in which each company ran its processes and handled its call floor. I’m sure as a business owner you may have received that annoying phone call wanting to give you a free demonstration. Our immediate response is to say “I’m not interested” then “CLICK”, hanging up as quickly as possible. We feel that they are all charlatans, schemers, out to take our money and give nothing in return. I have heard the stories, seen the outcomes, and yes it can be terrifying.
Not all companies deserve the bad reputation. There are some that follow the rules, and have excellent customer service, as well as do outstanding work on behalf of many different companies. The key to finding these companies is doing your homework. It is not enough to know how much their services cost, but we have to look for the warning signs as well as find the diamond hiding in the foliage of bad apples.
If you feel that you were manipulated or deceived by an SEO company in any way The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) handles any complaints about unfair practices. To file a complaint visit www.ftc.gov or call 877-FTC-HELP.
A few things to be cautious of when talking to an SEO company could be if the company says they can put you at the number one spot on Google. There are no SEO companies that have a “special or insider relationship” with Google. They have to use Google’s webmaster tools, the same as you would if you were doing the job yourself. Be wary, if the SEO company is unwilling to tell you their cost right away, or if they are unwilling to share with you how they will be working with your listing. Some companies have been known to use the paid advertisements on search engines. This practice not only ranges in fees, but does not guarantee any frontpage listing as well. Paid ads are also referred to as pay per click ads.
Although compared to SEO, a local Google pay per click advertising agency is a beneficial option to most businesses, it can be very expensive. Every Time a potential client clicks on that and it can range in cost from 50 cents to $500 . If you are a part of a large corporation perhaps your advertising budget is large and this may not be an issue for you. However small companies that have a small or limited budget may find it difficult to compete with such a large budget.
Be sure to ask your SEO Company:
- What kind of results do you expect to see, and in how long?
- How do you measure success?
- What’s your experience in my industry?
- How long have you been in business?
- Do you service many companies in my city?
- How can I expect to communicate with you?
These are just a few questions to consider asking when these telemarketer calls to give you that “FREE” demo. The companies willing to answer your questions and give full honest answers…do yourself a favor, give them a shot. And if they are unwilling to give you the information, Hang up.
